After Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) has been produced it is either stored for sale at a later time or immediately "surged" through bins into waiting trucks. Weight of HMA truck loads is determined by either low profile truck scales or through load cells on the surge bins themselves. Astec’s pioneering efforts in HMA storage silo technology changed the way producers operate. As the first true storage system, these silos brought the economies of long production runs to the HMA industry.
Long-Term Storage Silos
Astec hot mix storage systems come complete with drag conveyors, traverse conveyors and batchers. Bucket elevators are available. Standard design is to Seismic Zone IIA conditions and 150 miles per hour wind velocity. Our structural engineering staff will design your foundations based on soil conditions at your site.
Short-Term Storage Silos

The super functional SEB package combines several operations into a single unit: drag conveying, batching, surge/short term storage, truck loading and weighing. One truck brings the SEB to your site. Built-in running gear with airbag suspensions make moving easy. Hydraulic cylinders raise the portable unit into place.
Satellite Silo Systems
A simple solution to expand into a new market. A stand-alone mix storage system creates the opportunity to establish a retail location within a transportation radius of a parent plant.
The totally electronic, low-profile Astec Weigh Mate™ truck scale comes in lengths up to 140 feet and capacities up to 500 tons. Externally mounted shear beam load cells are connected to data collection terminal and ticket printers and can be matched to all digital readout units. Depending on length, the scales have between four and ten load cells. The scales are wired in conduit. Checkered steel deck plates and extra wide heavy flanges make the scales sturdy and durable.
Silos for dry additive are used for mineral filler, dust or lime in drum mix plants or batch plants. The silos comes in six different sizes, from 350 to 900 BBL capacity. Options include leg extensions, baghouses, self-erect and portability packages. Liquid additive systems are also offered. They are skid mounted and come complete with system controls, pumps valves and hot oil coils for materials that require heat. Liquid systems come in either 1,000 or 2,000 gallon size.
